The bottleneck is almost never the CPU
If your laptop takes several minutes to boot, freezes when opening more than two or three programs, or shows a spinning disk icon constantly, the processor is rarely the problem. On most laptops built for everyday use, the mechanical hard drive (HDD) is the single biggest speed bottleneck in the entire system ÔÇö and it is also the cheapest and most impactful thing to fix.
HDD vs SSD, in practical terms
A traditional HDD reads and writes data using a spinning magnetic platter and a physical arm, similar to a miniature record player. It is mechanically limited to roughly 80-160 MB/s. A solid-state drive (SSD) has no moving parts and reads/writes electronically, typically hitting 500 MB/s on a basic SATA SSD and over 3000 MB/s on an NVMe SSD. In real terms: a laptop that takes 3-5 minutes to fully boot on an HDD typically boots in 10-20 seconds on an SSD. Programs that took 30 seconds to open now open in 2-3 seconds.
What the upgrade process actually involves
The concern we hear most often is "will I lose everything?" ÔÇö the answer is no, if it is done properly. We clone your existing drive sector-by-sector onto the new SSD, which means Windows, all your installed programs, your files, and your settings transfer over exactly as they were. You boot into the same desktop you had before, just dramatically faster. The old HDD can either be removed or, on laptops with a spare drive bay or an optical drive that can be swapped for a caddy, kept in place as extra storage.
Choosing a capacity
- 256GB ÔÇö enough for Windows, common software, and moderate document/photo storage. Tight if you keep a large media library locally.

NVMe SSDs cost somewhat more than SATA SSDs but are only meaningfully faster if your laptop's motherboard actually has an NVMe-capable M.2 slot ÔÇö not all laptops do, so this is worth confirming before paying extra for one.
If an SSD alone does not fully fix it
Two other common contributors to a slow laptop are insufficient RAM (upgrading from 4GB to 8GB or higher makes a noticeable difference if you regularly have many browser tabs or programs open) and startup bloat ÔÇö software that launches automatically every time you turn the laptop on, silently eating resources in the background. Both are worth checking alongside an SSD upgrade rather than instead of one.
