Why laptops overheat
Heat is a laptop's biggest enemy, and it rarely happens for just one reason. Dust builds up inside the heatsink fins over months of normal use, blocking the airflow the fan is trying to push through. Thermal paste between the CPU and the cooler dries out over two to three years, losing most of its ability to transfer heat. Vents get blocked by soft surfaces like beds and cushions. And on cheaper models, the cooling system is simply undersized for the processor it is paired with.
None of this happens overnight, which is why overheating often gets ignored until the laptop starts shutting down mid-task or the fan sounds like a small jet engine.
5 things to try before it gets worse
1. Clean the vents with compressed air
Turn the laptop off, unplug it, and use a can of compressed air to blow through the exhaust vents in short bursts. Hold the fan blades still with a toothpick while you do this so the sudden air does not spin them past their rated speed. This alone can drop temperatures by several degrees if dust is the main culprit.
2. Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface
Beds, sofas, and laps block the intake vents on the underside of most laptops. A hard desk surface, or a $10 laptop stand that raises the base slightly, restores proper airflow underneath.
3. Check what is running in the background
Open Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) and sort by CPU usage. Background updaters, browser tabs, and crypto-miners hiding in bundled software all generate heat for no benefit. Closing them is free and immediate.
4. Use a cooling pad for sustained heavy use
If you regularly game, edit video, or run virtual machines, a cooling pad with its own fans pulls additional heat away from the base. It is not a fix for a genuinely failing cooling system, but it buys real headroom.
5. Get the thermal paste replaced professionally
If the laptop is more than two years old and still running hot after cleaning, the thermal paste has likely dried out. This requires opening the laptop, removing the old paste, and applying fresh compound directly to the CPU and GPU die ÔÇö not something to attempt without the right tools if you have not done it before. When to stop troubleshooting and get it looked at
If the laptop shuts down unexpectedly, the fan runs at full speed constantly even when idle, or the case is uncomfortably hot to touch, stop trying software fixes and get the cooling system serviced. Continuing to run a laptop that is thermal-throttling or shutting down under heat stress risks permanent damage to the motherboard ÔÇö solder joints under the GPU can crack from repeated heat cycles, which is a far more expensive repair than a cleaning and repaste.
