The first 60 seconds matter most
Liquid damage is a race against time, not a diagnosis you can figure out later. The moment you spill something on your laptop, do the following, in this order:
- Hold the power button down until the laptop shuts off completely. Do not use the normal shutdown menu ÔÇö every second the system stays on, current is flowing through components that liquid may already be touching.
- Unplug the charger immediately.
- Remove the battery if it is a removable type (most laptops from the last decade have internal batteries, which is fine ÔÇö skip this step).
- Flip the laptop upside down into a tent shape, so any pooled liquid drains out through the keyboard rather than sitting on the motherboard.
- Do not turn it back on "just to check." This is the single most damaging thing people do after a spill, and it is the main reason a salvageable laptop becomes an unsalvageable one.
The rice myth
Putting a wet laptop in a bag of rice is one of the most common pieces of advice online, and it does not work the way people think. Rice absorbs moisture from the air around the laptop, but it does nothing for liquid that has already worked its way between the layers of the motherboard, under chips, and into connectors. Meanwhile, if the spill was coffee, tea, or a soft drink, the sugar and acid in it are actively corroding copper traces while you wait ÔÇö and rice does nothing to stop that either.
Why timing changes the outcome so much
Plain water that reaches a professional within a few hours has a genuinely good recovery rate, because corrosion has not had time to set in. The same spill left for two or three days develops a fine layer of oxidation on any exposed metal, which is what actually causes permanent short circuits ÔÇö not the liquid itself. Sugary or salty liquids accelerate this considerably, which is why a coffee spill is meaningfully more urgent than a water spill.
What professional cleaning actually involves
We disassemble the laptop fully and run the motherboard through an ultrasonic cleaning bath in isopropyl alcohol, which reaches into gaps between components that manual cleaning cannot. After cleaning, the board is dried thoroughly and tested for shorts before we reassemble anything. If specific components have already corroded, those are repaired or replaced at the chip level rather than defaulting to a full motherboard swap.
What about my data?
This is usually the good news in a bad situation: the hard drive or SSD is a sealed, largely liquid-resistant unit, and in most cases survives even when the motherboard around it does not. If the laptop will not turn on after a spill, your files are very likely still intact and recoverable.
