Why Are Some Keys on My Laptop Keyboard Not Working?

Troubleshooting 2 min read 255 views

The Matrix of a Laptop Keyboard

Laptop keyboards use a membrane matrix. Underneath the keys, there are layers of thin plastic with conductive traces. When you press a key, it pushes the top trace into the bottom trace, completing a circuit.

Why Only Some Keys Fail

Because the traces are wired in a grid (columns and rows), a single microscopic break in one trace can knock out an entire row, column, or diagonal line of keys. If your Q, A, Z, and Tab keys all die at once, that is a classic matrix trace failure.

Common Causes

  • Micro-Spills: Even a single drop of sweat, water, or sanitizer can seep in and corrode a trace over time.
  • Dust and Debris: Crumbs can get lodged under the scissor mechanism, preventing the key from pressing down fully.
  • Flex Cable Degradation: The ribbon cable connecting the keyboard to the motherboard can become loose or damaged.

Can Individual Keys Be Repaired?

If the keycap itself is broken or the plastic scissor clip is snapped, we can sometimes replace just that key. However, if the underlying matrix trace is damaged (which is the case 90% of the time when a key goes dead without physical damage), the entire keyboard module must be replaced.
