Reliability and repairability are not the same question
"Which laptop brand is best" usually gets answered as if it's one question. It's actually two, and the data shows they don't move together: reliability is how often a brand's laptops break down, and repairability is how easy and affordable it is to fix one when it does. A brand can score well on one and poorly on the other — and as you'll see below, one of the biggest brands in the market does exactly that.
Most reliable laptop brands, by owner survey
PCMag's 2025 Readers' Choice survey — based on real owner feedback on breakdowns, repair experiences, and support — ranked brands as follows:
- LG: 9.6/10 — jumped from 4th to 1st place, the highest reliability score in the survey
- Apple: 9.3/10 — the previous year's winner, also rated first for technical support
- MSI & Apple: tied at 9.1/10 for overall satisfaction
- ASUS: 8.5/10
Dell placed at the bottom of both the PCMag survey and Consumer Reports' separate reliability data — a consistent enough result across two independent sources that it's worth knowing before you buy, not just before you repair.
Most repairable laptop brands, by independent scorecard
A different organization, US PIRG, grades brands purely on how easy their laptops are to open, diagnose, and fix — spare part availability, repair manual access, and part cost relative to the device. Their 2026 "Failing the Fix" scorecard found:
- ASUS: B+ — ranked #1 for repairability for the third year running
- Acer: B
- HP, Dell, Samsung, Microsoft: B- (tied)
- Lenovo: C
- Apple: C- — last place, and by a wide margin on ease of disassembly
So which laptop brand should you avoid?
Based on the data above, there's no single brand to avoid across the board — it depends what you're optimizing for:
- Apple breaks down the least (9.3/10 reliability) but is by far the hardest and most expensive to repair when it does fail. This is precisely why independent chip-level repair matters for MacBooks — an Apple Store quote for a logic board fault often costs several times what a specialist chip-level repair runs.
- Dell scores weakest on reliability in two separate surveys, but sits mid-pack on repairability (B-) — parts and service are at least accessible if something goes wrong.
- ASUS is the strongest all-rounder in this data: solid 8.5/10 satisfaction and the best repairability grade on the market.
"Which laptop brand should I avoid" doesn't have a one-word answer — but "which laptop will be expensive to fix if something breaks" does, and for mainstream brands, that's Apple.
What this means if you're deciding right now
Brand reliability data describes averages across thousands of units — it doesn't tell you what's wrong with the specific laptop in front of you. Whatever brand you own, our ₹350 doorstep diagnosis gives you a fault-specific answer: what broke, what it costs to fix, and whether that's worth it for your machine. We service all major brands, including chip-level MacBook logic board repair at a fraction of Apple Store pricing.
